Two flights of stairs meet at a landing, a flat platform that marks the change in direction. At the landing the stairway bends through roughly a right angle, which lets it fit a corner instead of running straight. Both flights share the same riser height, and the calculator splits the total risers between them as evenly as it can. The landing is the width of the stairway on each side. A stringer, the diagonal board that steps are cut into or attached to, runs from top to bottom of one flight, with the count based on a nominal 16 in on-center spacing: the stair width in inches divided by 16, rounded down, plus one, so a 36-in-wide stair gets 3 stringers at 18 in centers.
