Your total rise is divided between two flights joined at that landing partway up. Every step in both flights is the same height because the two flights use one riser height. A tall total rise that would make a single flight uncomfortably long is usually handled with a mid landing. It gives climbers a flat rest point and keeps either flight shorter. Every step in the stairway has one height because both flights receive an equal share of the risers, as close as the count allows. The landing itself matches the stairway's width on each side. Each flight has a stringer, a diagonal board that holds the steps, running from top to bottom of that flight. Stringer spacing targets a nominal 16 inches on centre, not a hard maximum. The calculator works out the stringer count by dividing the stair width by 16, rounding down, and adding one. For a stairway that turns at the landing, L-shaped and U-shaped variants are available on the site.

What calls for a mid landing on a stairway?
A tall total rise that would make a single flight uncomfortably long is usually handled with a mid landing. It gives climbers a flat rest point and splits the run into two shorter flights. Building codes such as the International Residential Code cap riser height at 7.75 inches, so a long climb often needs the break.
How big should the landing platform be?
The landing sits between the flights and matches the stairway's width on each side. Its depth comes from the total rise split and the riser and tread dimensions you enter.
Do a landing and a turn in a stairway mean the same thing?
No. A landing is just a flat platform that separates two flights. It does not have to change direction. The staircase can continue straight, or it can turn at the landing, which is what the site's L-shaped and U-shaped variants handle.
